How to Cut Trees in Lumberjack's Dynasty
Stay inside the yellow line, keep the saw in the orange bar, and never drop a red trunk.
Logging is the identity of Lumberjack’s Dynasty and the source of most early rage. The saw is a timing bar, the forest is zoned, and the mill only pays if you deliver clean, legal wood. This page is the field manual. Pair it with Getting Started if you still lack a trailer, and with the tree tier list before you buy a stand.
Engineer’s Sight is the real HUD
Right mouse (default) toggles Engineer’s Sight. Use it before every cut, not after a fine. In a forest it shows:
- A yellow border around the area you are allowed to clear.
- A safe-cut mark on trunks that belong to the job or to your land.
- A do-not-cut mark on protected or off-property trees. Cutting those lowers Social Points and issues a fine larger than the log’s value.
- After the tree is down: branch icons, bucking lengths, and dryness once wood sits at the mill.
Green stump or green trunk inside the line: cut. Red axe or red trunk: walk away. Bushes can be cleared almost anywhere; they are the exception, not a license to nibble the neighbour’s oak.
The saw minigame
Stand at the trunk, look toward the fall you want, and hold the cut input (left mouse on keyboard). Keep the saw icon inside the orange band by easing the mouse left or right. Too fast and you skip the band; too slow and the cut drags. Controllers bind the band movement to a stick or shoulder; check controls if your pad feels inverted.
Trees usually fall along your look direction. Buildings, slopes, and other trunks can kick the fall. Do not stand in the path for a joke; collision is light, but a hung tree against a barn is a reload. If a trunk rests on another tree, cut the support or winch it once you have a crane.
Delimb, buck, load
A downed tree is not money until it is a set of logs. Engineer’s Sight again:
- Cut every branch icon. Leftover limbs block trailer grabs and look like debris the mill will not take.
- Buck to the length your trailer wants. Early trailers are short. Oversized logs refuse to seat or sit so high they clip on bridges.
- Grab with the crane or, before you own one, carry by hand only for tutorial piles. Hand-carrying a whole forest is how the first evening disappears.
Isaac’s old wood trailer is the first real loader. The later Grapple Crane Wood Trailer (about 21,000 Euro, or half cash plus Social Points) is the upgrade you actually want. Ponsse Bison is a log forwarder, not a first-week toy. See vehicles.
Property lines and bought forests
When you purchase a stand, a line on the ground is the contract. Inside: your trees, usually with a green stump cue. Outside: not yours. The video above walks the line and the mill prices that make oak and birch worth the extra land cost. Fines on illegal cuts exceed the timber. There is no smuggler bonus.
Quest jobs often tell you to stack logs on a marker and then say you may keep the rest. Take the rest. Players who walk away from mission wood donate a trailer load to the void. The same rule applies when a farmer asks you to clear a field: clear, load, mill.
Stumps, replanting, and the Timberjack
A stump left in a bought forest is unfinished work. After Isaac’s second visit you can grind stumps and plant. Logan-style quests demand every stump gone and every sapling placed. Plant dense enough to spend the last seedling; one leftover plant that will not fit can block completion. Keep a save before a full replant.
Carson’s planting job is the usual early Timberjack. You want grinding and planting unlocked first, or the quest stalls. The Timberjack is a mid-game multiplier, not a replacement for legal sight. A machine that drops a protected tree still fines you.
Species and mill direction
Not every trunk is equal. Oak dried planks pay more per pallet than birch, which pay more than pine. Spruce sits in the same conversation as the other softwoods. If a listing is cheap because the stand is pine, you are buying volume, not value. The tree tier list and mill profits convert that into Euro per day of drying.
Send wood to the mill, not only to a river dump, unless a quest forces a float. Dry cycles take around ten in-game days. Sleeping through them wastes the cooking and repair hours that make money relies on.
Safety habits
- Sight on before the first pull of the saw.
- Check the yellow line after you rotate the camera. The border is easy to step over while backing a trailer.
- Fuel the saw and the tractor at the farm tank after a bulk delivery, not at the most expensive pump.
- Do not cut in the dark if you cannot read icons. Sleep.
- If a log turns into a boulder or sinks, reload the backup save. Console players hit this more often; see console release.
Logging in this game is slow on purpose. The satisfaction is a clean face, a loaded trailer, and a mill that still has space. Speed comes from better machines on the vehicle tier list, not from ignoring the orange bar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Why did I get a fine after cutting a tree?
The trunk was protected or outside your yellow border. Engineer's Sight shows a red mark. The fine is larger than the log, so it is never worth it.
Which way does a tree fall?
Usually along your look direction when you start the cut. Slopes and other trees can redirect it. Face the landing zone before you hold the saw.
Can I cut bushes anywhere?
Yes. Bushes are generally legal even off your land. Trees are not. Always Sight-check trunks.
When should I stop hand-carrying logs?
As soon as Isaac's trailer is yours. Hand carries are for tutorial piles. Buy a better crane trailer when the old one is full every trip; see vehicles.
